So there’s this hurricane…

In our previous blog post I explained how we were inspired to live in a mortgage free home. In case of another recession, job loss, sickness, or any other unforeseen financial emergency, we wanted to be sure that loosing our home wouldn’t be added to the mix. But as with most things in life, there’s more to it than just that.
My husband and I met right after Hurricane Rita, and my husband witnessed Hurricane Ike and the chaos of the aftermath as a first-responder in Houston. So as we were planning our mortgage free future, future storms were still on our minds. Of course there’s no place free from all natural disasters. If not hurricanes then there’s wild fires, severe winter storms, droughts, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and volcanoes. So instead of trying to run from all potential disasters we decided to split the difference and move closer to the outer edge of the typical hurricane zone.
Even though Hurricane Harvey isn’t done yet, I’ve already been told that we’re lucky that we haven’t had tremendous amounts of damage. I was surprised that the comment made me a little upset, though I know it was not the intention. Lucky is if you are in the direct path and the storm suddenly veers around you, though most would tell you they call that something other than luck. Instead, we made sacrifices to move away from the areas hit hardest by storms in the past. We are no longer within walking distance to teenage hangout spots, fast food, and grocery stores. We moved even farther from family. We had only one option for cellular service and the only internet available tends to be limited and slow. But, to us, feeling safe at a time when many are in fear of loosing their homes makes it all worth it.
